Three Reasons Why Hyundai Is a Great Green Choice

With Earth Day coming up, and summer excursions and road trips in the not-too-distant future, it’s a good time to talk about how to lessen your carbon footprint without curbing your ability to get out and GO! That’s where expert opinions on “Green” vehicles can help you make important choices. 

GreenerCars.org is out with its lists of “Greenest” vehicles. The list actually is compiled using ratings compiled by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).  Not surprisingly, Hyundai is well represented on the “Greenest” list, with the 2024 Hyundai Elantra Blue gas-hybrid, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric and 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV. 

The ACEEE assesses every new model in the so-called “light-duty” vehicle market and bases its rankings on “the greenhouse gas and criteria pollutant emissions from the production, use, and disposal of each vehicles.” In other words, it’s not all about fuel consumption, although that’s an important component. 

• The 2024 Hyundai Elantra Blue is a Gas-Hybrid vehicle that scored 64 on Green Score, has an MSRP of $26,250 and an estimated annual fuel cost, based on ACEEE’s assumption that it would be driven 15,000 miles, of $864. It has a 1.6-liter, 4-cylider hybrid powertrain and gets 51 mpg city/58 mpg highway. It also has myriad safety and comfort features.
• The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is an all-electric vehicle with a 63 Green Score, starting MSRP of $32,675 and annual estimated fuel cost of $695. The EPA estimates its range of up to 261 miles and it offers power up to 201 hp/150kW. May be eligible for a Colorado tax credit, too.
• The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV had a Green Score of 62, $41,800 MSRP and annual estimated fuel cost of $737. This award-winning SUV has an estimated range of 303 miles on power of up to 320 hp/239 kW. May be eligible for a Colorado tax credit, too.

Compare those to the best of the list’s “Meanest” vehicles, which earned just a 30 Green Score, and annual estimated fuel cost of $3,031. It’s also worth mentioning that of the list of 12 Meanest vehicles, all but two cost upwards of $75,000, and a some were north of $110,000.
