Tariff Update: What We Know as of April 4th
April 4, 2025
Following our previous update on the new automotive tariffs, we’ve received many questions about how these changes specifically impact Hyundai vehicles. As your trusted dealership, we want to provide clarity on which models are affected and what this means for your purchasing decisions.
U.S.-Built Hyundai Models: Minimally Affected
Good news for fans of certain Hyundai models! Vehicles manufactured in the United States are largely protected from the new 25% import tariffs. Hyundai currently produces these popular models domestically:
- Ioniq 5: Hyundai’s award-winning electric SUV
- Santa Cruz: The versatile sport adventure vehicle
- Santa Fe: The spacious, tech-forward family SUV
These American-built vehicles should experience minimal price impacts from the tariff implementation.
Mixed Production: Tucson
The popular Hyundai Tucson presents an interesting case as its production is split between U.S. and Mexican facilities. While vehicles manufactured in the U.S. are largely shielded from tariff impacts, those imported from Mexico may see some pricing adjustments. Our team can help identify the origin of specific Tucson models in our inventory.
Korean-Built Models: Tariff Impacted
The remainder of Hyundai’s lineup is manufactured in Korea and will be subject to the new tariff structure. These include:
- Elantra
- Sonata
- Kona
- Palisade
- Venue
- Accent
Vehicles already in our current inventory were imported before the tariff implementation, allowing us to maintain stable pricing on these models for a limited time.
Hyundai’s Response to Tariffs
As of April 3, 2025, Hyundai has taken a measured approach to the tariff situation. According to Reuters, Hyundai’s co-CEO Jose Muñoz stated that the Korean automaker doesn’t have any immediate plans to raise prices. Similarly, Mike Song, the global head of Genesis (Hyundai’s luxury brand), confirmed to Car and Driver that the brand isn’t planning on raising prices right now, though he acknowledged that eventually, they will have to pass costs onto customers.
This suggests a window of opportunity for buyers interested in Korean-manufactured Hyundai models, as the company appears to be absorbing the initial tariff costs while developing longer-term pricing strategies.
What This Means For Buyers
If you’re considering a Hyundai purchase, this creates a strategic opportunity:
- U.S.-Built Models: Consider the Ioniq 5, Santa Cruz, or Santa Fe for minimal tariff impact
- Current Inventory: Korean-built models currently on our lot remain at pre-tariff pricing
- Future Purchases: Plan accordingly for potential price adjustments on imported models
